Sneaker socks slip into the shoe – this helps
You start walking, and after two hundred meters, it's gone. The sneaker sock is sitting somewhere under the ball of your foot, your ankle is sticking out bare over the top of the shoe, and it feels like you're walking barefoot. Short socks do that – and almost everyone has developed their own silent technique for it.

The three maneuvers
If you read this list, you will recognize yourself in at least one person – and at least one person from your circle in another.

- The heel picker. Put your index finger in the back of your shoe, pull up your sock, and keep walking. It takes two seconds and usually doesn't last five minutes.
- The toe bend. She curls her toes as she walks, hoping the sock will come along on its own. It never does.
- The car stool. Squat down behind a parked car and pretend to retie his shoe.
Why is she slipping at all?
A long sock stays in place at the top of the shoe – above the ankle, where nothing pulls it down. A short sock doesn't have this top. Its only point of support is at the heel, and that's precisely where the heel counter of the shoe works against it with every step: The heel lifts slightly out of the shoe as the foot rolls, the sock gets caught on the inside and migrates downwards millimeter by millimeter. After a few hundred steps, it's gone.

The support is located at the heel.
This leads to an uncomfortable truth: with short socks, everything hinges on a single point. If they slip at the heel, they'll slip everywhere. That's why... The cut ends just below the top of the shoe: nothing is visible, and nothing is noticeable.
What else helps
- Don't buy one that's too big. A sock that's a size too big has nothing at the heel to grip onto. If you're between sizes, you're often better off with the smaller size for short socks than with long ones.
- Pay attention to the heel position, not the length. Whether a short sock stays up depends on the back closure – not how far it extends over the instep at the front.
- Discard worn-out pairs. Once the elastic band is stretched, it won't spring back. That's the point at which even the most skilled heel puller gives up.
- Avoid shoes with a lot of heel movement. The more the heel works inside the shoe, the faster the sock will shift – with every model.
