Materials science: Which fabric for what — and why elastane determines the fit

In short: For clothing worn next to the body, the material determines whether you feel warm, cold, or uncomfortably damp. Cotton is the all-rounder, merino wool the temperature regulator, and linen the summer specialist. With socks, a fourth factor comes into play that almost no one considers: the elastane content. It determines whether the socks still fit after twenty washes.

Cotton — the all-rounder with one weakness

Cotton is soft, skin-friendly, and absorbs moisture well. Therefore, it is the obvious choice for anything that comes into direct contact with the skin.

The weakness lies in this same property. Cotton absorbs moisture and releases it slowly. A sweaty cotton sock remains damp. This is why pure cotton is a bad idea for sports but a good one for everyday wear.

Good for: T-shirts, underwear, everyday socks.
Bad for: Running, hiking, all involving a lot of sweat over hours.

Merino wool — the temperature regulator

Merino wool doesn't itch like classic sheep's wool because its fibers are finer. Its real advantage: it keeps you warm without overheating and hardly smells even after several days.

The downside is the price and the care. Merino wool should be washed in cold water and dried flat. If you put it in the dryer, you'll end up with a garment that's much too small for most people.

Good for: Winter sweaters, hiking socks, long journeys.
Bad for: Everything that needs to be washed at a high temperature.

Linen — cool, honest, crinkly

Linen is the most breathable fiber in your wardrobe. At 30 degrees Celsius in the shade, a linen shirt is significantly more comfortable than any cotton shirt.

It wrinkles. Always. Anyone who sees that as a flaw won't be happy with linen — anyone who accepts it as part of its character has the best summer fabric of all.

Synthetics — unjustly condemned across the board

Polyester and polyamide have a bad reputation, and in their pure form this is often deserved: poor air circulation, odor formation, clammy skin feeling.

The situation is different with blends. A small percentage of polyamide makes a fabric significantly more abrasion-resistant. That's precisely why it's found in practically every durable sock—pure cotton would wear through much faster at the heel and toes.

Elastane — the invisible ingredient that determines the fit

This is the point that most fabric guides overlook. Elastane usually makes up only a few percent of a fabric. But it's precisely this small percentage that determines whether a garment retains its shape or stretches out.

With socks, that's the crucial difference. Without elastic in the cuff, the sock slips down into the shoe—and you're constantly pulling it up all day. A pure cotton sock fits well the first time you wear it, but after fifteen washes, it doesn't fit at all.

What this means specifically for socks

Socks are the toughest test for any material in your closet. They're in your shoes all day, subjected to mechanical stress, and washed in hot water. Three things have to come together:

  1. Soft cotton as the main component — for skin feel and moisture absorption.
  2. Some polyamide — for abrasion resistance at the heel and toes.
  3. Some elastane — for a bond that still holds after months.

In addition, there are two constructive details that have nothing to do with the material, but are just as important: how the toe area is constructed, because that's where practically every hole originates, and whether a label is sewn in, because it rubs in the same place with every step.

Material care — four rules that are sufficient

  • Cotton: 40 degrees is sufficient for everyday use. 60 degrees is only for white laundry that really needs it – heat reduces elasticity.
  • Merino: Cold, wool cycle, dry flat. Never tumble dry.
  • Everything with elastane: Leave out fabric softener. It coats the fibers and takes away exactly the resilience you bought them for.
  • Socks: Wash inside out. The abrasion will then occur on the inside.

The third rule is the one most frequently broken—and the one that makes the biggest difference. Fabric softener is the fastest way to ruin a good sock cuff.

There is no best material, only suitable ones. Cotton for everyday wear, merino for cold weather and long days, linen for heat, and synthetics blended in for durability and fit.
