Why do socks get holes – and where do they start?

There are two kinds of people: those whose socks give out at the big toe – and those whose heels wear through first. Almost everyone knows immediately which category they belong to. This is no coincidence, and it says more about their gait than about the sock.

What type are you?

Look at your laundry. The area that thins first often stays the same for years – after all, your gait doesn't change. Two patterns consistently appear.

Zwei getragene weisse Socken, oben ein Loch am grossen Zeh, unten ein Loch an der Ferse
  • Hole on the big toe. With every step, the toenail works against the same piece of fabric. This is exacerbated by those who curl their toes in their shoes or wear shoes that are too short.
  • Hole in the heel. Here, the heel rubs against the back of the shoe. Anyone who shuffles rather than rolls their foot properly, or wears shoes with a lot of heel movement, will recognize this pattern.

Why always the same places?

Because that's where most of the action happens. The sole, heel, and toe area are the zones that experience pressure and friction with every step. The upper part of the shoe, on the other hand, is hardly stressed – that's why socks are usually still perfectly fine at the top when there's already a hole at the bottom.

Sole, heel and toe area – these are the three places you should check first.

What helps – honestly sorted

  1. Check shoe size. If there's no space at the front, the toe will constantly press against the same spot – buying socks won't solve that.
  2. Keep toenails short. Unspectacular, but the easiest way to combat toe rash.
  3. Avoid walking on bare ground all the time. Tiles and parquet flooring put additional strain on the sole – it is more protected inside a shoe.
  4. Choose the appropriate size. A sock that is too small is under constant tension and therefore rubs more.
